In todays lecture, I will explain the role of probation and parole in criminal justice system.
Parole and probation are procedures for release of convicted offenders or adjudicated delinquents on a conditional basis in order to assist them in pursuing a non-criminal life.

Probation is allowed by the courts.
Parole refers to the conditional release of prisoners or offenders in certain cases before the completion of the term of imprisonment to which they have been sentenced.
Under these rules, the Executive (Home Secretary) of the province is empowered to release certain offenders on parole.
Limitations of probation and parole
The Reclamation and Probation Departments (RPD) is not well established in Pakistan
The staff is not sufficient and even the available staff is not well trained.
The Pakistan Probation of Offender Ordinance 1960 is limited in its scope as: Probation is not extended to all types of offences.
Very few prisoners are given the facilities of probation or parole
The probation law is applicable to both male and female offenders, however the law is more lenient towards female offenders.
The probation law is not applicable to male offenders guilty of offences punishable by death or life imprisonment and of heinous nature.
Recommendations
The Reclamation and Probation Departments (RPD) be organized on modern lines.
It must be staffed with adequate, well trained, and motivated human resource.
More financial resources be placed at the disposal of the department to make it functional.
The scope of probation and parole be extended to more prisoners.
