David Gates is not only the composer and vocalist on this song but he also plays the bass very beautiful! The bassline has got double stops; slides and melodic lines. And it’s also a bassline which is played with ‘ease’. Wonderful to play!!

Please listen to the difference in playing the double stops in bars 5-7 versus those in bars 17 and 19; and 37 and 39.

In bar 35 he plays a wonderful melodic lick on the fourth beat (in cooperation/respons with the vocals).
