Japan’s nuclear ghost towns are planning a comeback

In Fukushima prefecture, two towns were worst hit by Japan’s worst nuclear disaster – Futaba and Okuma. Both are home to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and their downtown areas are mere kilometres from the radioactive complex that melted down after being hit by an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. High levels of radiation forced thousands of survivors to evacuate until the Japanese government determined conditions were safe enough to lift restrictions. Today, portions of Okuma and Futaba are being rebuilt. Some of the region’s oldest residents, including 84-year-old Ukichi Sato, say their communities may even thrive again in the not-too-distant future.
