Gambia has moved a step closer towards repealing a ban on female genital mutilation.
The national assembly voted to send a bill on ending the ban to a parliamentary committee for further discussions.

Removing the ban would end legal protections for millions of girls and women.
Supporters of the proposed measure marched in the capital Banjul, as parliament held a debate.
The United Nations estimates nearly three quarters of women and girls between 15 and 49 years old have suffered genital mutilation in Gambia.

Jaha Dukureh is an activist and founder of Safe Hands For Girls.
She says the people behind the campaign to overturn the ban, are seeking more control over women in Gambia.
