China has a very complex linguistic landscape. When someone says ‘Chinese’, they usually mean Mandarin, the official language of the Republic. But when it comes to the Chinese ‘dialects’, there is a lot more confusion: what even is Cantonese? Is it really a dialect of Mandarin? Is it much harder, and should I avoid learning a dialect, or the ‘wrong Chinese’?

After seeing a lot of rubbish on the Internet, I decided to explain everything from a scientific and historically accurate standpoint.
