Manipur Violence: The Supreme Court of India refused to accede to a request to direct the Army and paramilitary forces regarding security deployments in violence-torn Manipur. The Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud stated that civilian control over the armed forces is one of the hallmarks of democracy, and the court will never breach that. The CJI’s comment came after senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, representing select tribal groups from Manipur, sought to draw the attention of the Supreme Court bench to what he claimed were one-sided attacks on people belonging to tribal communities.
