When you’re learning something fast or difficult, it’s tempting to either push the tempo or creep it up little by little — and often end up tense and frustrated. Fast music feels much harder when your body isn’t relaxed.

In today’s video I’ll show you my “up ten, down five” metronome exercise — a gravity-inspired way to reach fast tempos more smoothly while releasing tension. It works for beginner musicians as well as advanced players, and all you need is a metronome and your instrument (or your voice).

You’ll also get a relaxation exercise at the end to help you stay calm and focused before tackling fast passages in your practice.
