California and New Mexico have been hit by wildfires made worse by severe drought conditions and high winds. Almost 1,000 firefighters have been battling a massive blaze in Los Angeles County, California that has threatened more than a thousand homes.

Authorities say the Powerhouse wildfire in the Lake Hughes area, 65 miles north of LA, is burning out of control with shifting winds and other adverse weather conditions hampering efforts to tackle it.

Meanwhile, a wildfire caused by downed power lines in the Pecos wilderness in New Mexico has forced the evacuation of 150 homes.

Hot temperatures, extreme dry conditions and wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour have whipped the flames through the steep mountainous terrain

A spokesman for New Mexico's State Forestry agency said they had not seen drought conditions like this since the 1950s. Report by Jeremy Barnes.
