EDGEWOOD, Ky. (WKRC) - We all know that breast milk is considered the gold standard for babies immediately after birth.

Sometimes a mother can't supply that milk so Northern Kentucky has the first of its kind Breast Milk Depot.

The Milk Bank announced a new partnership with a team at Saint Elizabeth Healthcare in Edgewood.

The Milk Bank invites mom who pump extra breast milk to drop it off at the hospital.

Donated milk is placed in a refrigerator at drop off points and then it's screened and pasteurized.

The milk is premature infants or in babies who are sick in the NICU.

Susan McDonald, Vice President and Chief Nursing of St. Elizabeth Healthcare, said, "This breast milk is so beneficial for moms and babies, a lot of moms want to have breast milk for babies and cannot, so this is a process that allows them to have safe, pasteurized breast milk."

New moms need to fill out the proper paperwork for screening and be approved for drop off before regularly delivering milk to the depot.

Pasteurized Donor Human Milk is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization.
