Increased demand for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) inpatient care has resulted in many young people aged under-18 being admitted to hospitals far away from their home or, in some cases, to adult wards.

The “Far Away from Home” study examined the scale, impact and costs of admissions of under 18s to mental health units at distance from their home, to a different NHS region, or to adult wards.

This webinar presents national data on the frequency, clinical characteristics and outcomes of 290 admissions collected over a 13-month period, including follow-up data, in addition to findings from interviews with young people, parents and healthcare professionals on the impact of these admissions.

This study is funded by NIHR ARC East Midlands and supported by NIHR ARC East of England, Greater Manchester, Oxford & Thames Valley and West Midlands. The views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.
