Music: John Ness Beck
Text: Isaiah 40:11, Psalm 23:1
Orchestration: Mack Wilberg

The Ohio-based musician John Ness Beck was also a world-renowned choral conductor and arranger, and a prolific composer of sacred music. Beck began arranging music even before studying formally at university, and eventually served on the music faculty at The Ohio State University. In his setting of “He Shall Feed His Flock,” which combines pastoral texts from Isaiah 40:11 and Psalm 23:1, Beck employs a lilting triple meter to underscore the bucolic calm of the “shepherding” lyrics. “He Shall Feed His Flock” was published in 1986, the year before Beck’s untimely death. Mack Wilberg’s orchestration of the original piano accompaniment endorses the pastoral peace of the setting with sustained string and woodwind figures.

(Lyrics)
He shall feed His flock like a shepherd:
He shall gather the lambs with His arm,
And carry them in His bosom.
And gently shall lead those that are with young.
He shall gather the lambs in His arm,
He will shelter them, and carry them close to His heart;
And gently, so gently, shall lead those with young.
He shall feed His flock like a shepherd:
He shall gather the lambs with His arm,
And carry them in his bosom.
And gently, so gently, and ever so gently shall lead those with young.
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
Amen.
