EPISODE 37: A Wayback Wallace Western features a full tutorial and review of another one of Martin Wallace's earliest game designs. This game is one of the original worker placement board games, even though it rarely gets the credit it deserves. The game is nearly 25 years old, and while it shows its age visually, the gameplay holds up by today's gaming standards. Way Out West has a unique blend of Euro mechanisms with dice rolling for combat (which I typically don't enjoy, but this game is an exception). It has been in my game collection for 7 years, and we still return to it multiple times a year. I love the player interaction, the "wild west" thematic tension, and the old-school charm. I made this video for two reasons: First, I believe this game deserves way more attention. Second, the rulebook is the stuff of nightmares! Skip the rulebook and learn from this video instead!

Hint: Watch on 2x speed to cut the learning time in half!

RULES CLARIFICATIONS
1. Technically, when placing new cattle, the rules imply you only need to check the previous numbered town. If that town is half full or less, then the cattle must fill there first. For example, if you want to place new cattle in Town 4, the rules imply that you only need to check Town 3. If Town 3 is more than half full, then you're good to place in Town 4. Town 2 and Town 1 wouldn't matter in that example, I guess? However, that seems odd to us. We have always played where you must check all previous numbered towns for being "half full or less" and fill cattle from bottom to top. It seems to make more sense that way. Regardless, the rulebook is poorly written regarding this (and many of the game's nuances). You can interpret that how you see fit.
