(3 Dec 2008) SHOTLIST
New Carrollton, Maryland - 3 December 2008
1. Zoom into Chrysler Vice Chairman Jim Press at podium
2. Cutaway audience and cameraman
3. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jim Press, Vice Chairman, Chrysler:
"In the last 90 days with the destruction of confidence, the credit not being available, all of the problems that have really begun from outside that aren't just affecting us in the industry or in America - it is a global problem - we've seen the auto market here drop by about a third. So you take a third of our business away - it is about seven billion dollars of cash that we have lost that we don't have to keep running, to keep investing and it's brought us on the brink of this. Nobody is here because we want to be. This is a necessity and this is about jobs and preserving our company."
4. Cutaway audience
5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jim Press, Vice Chairman, Chrysler:
"The fact of the matter is we are in a recession. Right now if one of the companies went bankrupt, as has been said, it would take others with them because the suppliers are so interlaced. A lack of confidence would cause customers to shy away from buying a vehicle where they may not know if they could get parts and service support, and more importantly than that, instead of a recession, if we lost the industry, more than four and a half million jobs would be affected, there could be a depression at some point."
6. Various of Chrysler's EV (Electric Vehicle) Dodge on display
Detroit, Michigan - 3 December 2008
7. Wide of news conference
8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Ron Gettelfinger, President, United Auto Workers union:
"We are going to be reviewing the agreements and we are going to consider modifications. Any modifications that we make in those agreements, we will take back to our membership for ratification."
9. Side of Gettelfinger speaking
10. SOUNDBITE: (English) Ron Gettelfinger, President, United Auto Workers union:
"I said we are going to engage our bargaining committees and move forward with further modifications - I am not even sure what that means myself today."
11. Cutaway United Auto Workers union members listening
12. SOUNDBITE: (English) Ron Gettelfinger, President, United Auto Workers union:
"Ah, look there is perception problem, there sure is. I don't question that."
13. SOUNDBITE: (English) Frank Hammer, retired United Auto Workers member:
"We're going to try to get out of this ditch in the same way, and I think that people have to understand, this doesn't get us out of the ditch. What gets us out of the ditch is a new approach, a new different way of doing things."
14. SOUNDBITE: (English) Melvin Thompson, Dodge (Chrysler) autoworker:
"I have thoughts about the fact that the only people who are being raked over the coals for a loan, is the autoworkers."
15. SOUNDBITE: (English) Kenny Williams, Dodge (Chrysler) autoworker
"We are in a bad way now. If we don't get that help, I think that a couple of us might go up under."
16. Workers leaving Dodge plant
STORYLINE:
A top executive from the US carmaker Chrysler warned on Wednesday that a collapse of the auto business could send the US economy spiralling into a depression, while the United Auto Workers (UAW) union agreed to new concessions for their companies.
Jim Press, Chrysler's vice chairman, said the US automakers had only enough cash left to last months, as industry officials ratcheted up a fierce lobbying push to persuade Congress to approve as much as 34 billion US dollars in emergency aid.
Speaking at a car dealership in New Carrollton, Maryland, Press said, "the fact of the matter is we are in a recession."
