(7 Jun 2014) The ex-spy chief for former Peru President Alberto Fujimori took the stand on Friday as part of Fujimori's anti-corruption trial, but refused to testify as a witness.
68-year-old Vladimiro Montesinos told the judges he wouldn't answer questions in spite of the magistrate insisting several times that he was a witness who was bound by law to provide testimony.
"There are two legal rules enacted by the current government in the month of December 2012 prohibiting me as a (former) intelligence officer to talk about resources allocated to the National Intelligence Service," Montesinos reminded the court.
He said such information was "classified."
The former president, who is already serving a 25 year sentence for previous convictions, is being tried for allegedly diverting government funds to finance tabloid newspapers that backed his successful run for a third term.
75-year-old Fujimori watched Montesinos in silence while taking notes.
At the end of the session, Montesinos nodded in acknowledgement to Fujimori before leaving the courtroom.
Montesinos' actions on Friday are a reversal of what he told a court in 2005, when he claimed that Fujimori "ordered" an analysis of tabloids that, for a low price, would be able to shift public opinion on his re-election efforts.
Anti-corruption prosecutor Christian Salas said that in anticipation of Montesinos' refusal to testify, prosecutors had already submitted to court his testimony from other trials.
The last time Montesinos and Fujimori saw each other in person was in June 2008, following the trial that found Fujimori guilty of the murders of 25 people, killed by clandestine soldiers during his time in office.
Montesinos is also serving 25 years in prison for these same murders, and for corruption.
