Well, I lucked into a couple of days off from work and couldn’t be happier. It’s a beautiful day out and I’ve got absolutely nothing I need to do. I’ve also got a file with over 40 covers sitting on my desktop that I’d like to start emptying, but I always struggle when trying to decide what to post. I did this one a while back and when I clicked on it, it just felt like a good one for today as I’m feeling a rare bit of mild exuberance. And it looks like the song was released as a single way back in June of ’82, so this is an anniversary of sorts, right? I like this song for a lot of the same reasons I like “Our House” by Madness. Primarily, it has a great melody and counter melodies and I really like hyper-syncopation of the bass and bass drum and how locked in they are on these songs. I’ve always had vivid recollection of the bass player in the video for this song dancing around the streets in ratty overalls playing an Alembic bass. I remember thinking it odd that they’d portray a “street urchin” playing (what was then) a $3-4,000 instrument. I’m glad I checked myself because there was no Alembic in sight on the videos I just watched. I have no idea where that memory came from.

Another thing that make this song interesting are the tempo changes. You don't come across that all too often.

There’s a pretty off color joke about this song out there, something about a fellow being thrown out of a dance club or something like that, but I’m not going to post it.

“Come On Eileen” by the band, Dexys Midnight Runners, off of their album, “Too-Rye-Ay” which came out in 1982. According to Wikipedia, Giorgio Kilkenny played the bass on this song.
