counter flow cooling towers, air flows opposite to the water flow. Air enters the tower beneath the fill and is drawn up vertically into the tower. Above the fill, hot water is introduced through low pressure spray nozzles to divide the hot water over the surface of the fill in fine droplets. The cooling air draws heat from the water as it progresses to the bottom of the tower. The drift eliminator above the spray nozzle captures water droplets and returns the water to the circulating system. A cold water cooling tower basin contains the water after its interaction with the air flow.
First of all, cooling towers are used mainly when there is no water source available for cooling. This could be due to lack of water resources in the country it self or of fear of contamination.

Cooling towers uses the heat transfer method of convection and surface area contact between fluids to help cool water cycling back from the source that is to be cooled to a suitable temperature to re-carry heat (power plants and HVAC systems are a good example).

cooling tower’s function is to remove heat from a building or process application that generates heat and must be dissipated. The fundamental principal employed in accomplishing this removal of heat is the evaporation of water. How this evaporation is accomplished varies among differing types of cooling towers but nearly all towers rely upon the atomization of the water over sprinkler heads, allowing the water to “rain” over fills which are a honeycomb-like structure that increases the surface area of the water , and then pulling air across the surface of the water through the use of fans.

The concept of a cooling tower is to pull heat from an area or a stream of water through use of evaporation or through using a continuous flow of air to cool the working fluid to the ambient air temperature. Ambient temperature in this case is defined as the wet-bulb air temperature in the case of evaporation, and the dry-bulb air temperature in the case of air flow of a working fluid. Commonly, cooling towers are used for cooling oil refineries, chemical plants, and thermal power stations, including coal-fired steam plants and nuclear power plants.

Cooling tower works basically on the principle of evaporation. In this process the sensible heat of hot water is converted to latent heat of vaporisation. Thus reducing the temperature of the exposed surface area of water to the air. More is the surface area of water exposes to air greater is the cooling, thus requires lesser height of construction of cooling tower. This is why water is generally sprinkled into the cooling tower.
