Smart Light Cap Could Transform Hair-Loss Treatment

Scientists have developed a soft, wearable light-therapy cap that may offer a safer and more convenient solution for hair loss. Created by researchers from KAIST (South Korea) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, this new device uses flexible OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology instead of bulky helmet-style systems.

Unlike traditional phototherapy devices that rely on small LED or laser points, the new cap uses area-emitting OLEDs that spread light evenly across the scalp. The fabric-like design fits comfortably like a hat, allowing users to receive treatment during daily activities.

The researchers also fine-tuned the light wavelength to near-infrared (730–740 nm), which is especially effective in stimulating dermal papilla cells—key cells responsible for hair growth. Laboratory tests on human hair-follicle cells showed a remarkable 92% reduction in cell aging, a major cause of hair loss. This performance surpassed conventional red-light therapies.

Because the treatment is non-invasive and drug-free, it may provide a safer alternative to long-term medications. The team plans further safety and preclinical studies before real-world use.

This innovation points toward a future where treating hair loss could be as simple as wearing a smart cap.
