If you think sports scandals only happen in baseball or soccer, welcome to ski jumping — where elite athletes literally fly through the air, and a tiny seam in a suit can become an international controversy.
What’s the scandal?
At last year’s World Ski Championships, officials uncovered something deeply fishy with the ski jumping suits worn by members of Norway ski jumping team — one of the most dominant programs in the sport.
Specifically, investigators found that the suits of two Norwegian jumpers — Marius Lindvik and Johann Andre Forfang — were illegally altered in the crotch area.
That’s right. The part of the suit right where the legs join the torso.
Why does it matter? Because in ski jumping, aerodynamics matter more than anywhere else in sport, and suit fit is legally regulated down to tiny margins.
Altering a suit — even by adding micro-material or reshaping a panel — can reduce drag and increase lift. At the elite level, centimeters matter. Some aerodynamics experts estimate that a slight advantage in that area could add five, six, even eight meters to a jump — absolutely huge in competition.
