The symptoms of Alzheimer’s worsen over time. Alzheimer’s disease mainly affects people over age 65. The signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) vary based on the stage of the condition.
Symptoms of AD become noticeable in the mild stage. The most common early symptom is forgetting newly learned information, especially recent events, places and names.
Other signs and symptoms of mild Alzheimer’s include:
1. Having difficulty finding the right words to express thoughts.
2. Losing or misplacing objects more than usual.
3. Having difficulty making plans or organizing.
4. Having difficulty problem-solving.
5. Taking longer to complete routine daily tasks.
Moderate Alzheimer’s is typically the longest stage and can last many years. People in this stage may:
1. Have increased memory loss and confusion.
2. Have growing confusion.
3. Have poor short-term memory.
4. Have difficulty recognizing friends and family.
5. Tend to repeat stories, thoughts or events on their minds.
6. Have difficulty with doing simple math or calculations.
7. Need help with self-care activities.
8. Experience more profound personality changes, including being agitated or acting out. They may show depression, apathy or anxiety as the disease progresses.
9. Develop groundless suspicions about family, friends and caregivers (delusions).
10. Develop urinary incontinence and/or fecal (bowel) incontinence.
11. Have sleep disturbances.
12. Begin to wander from their living area.
In the final stage of Alzheimer’s, dementia symptoms are severe. In the severe stage of Alzheimer’s disease, the person often:
1. Has almost total memory loss.
2. Is unaware of their surroundings.
3. Needs help with all basic activities of everyday living, such as eating, sitting up and walking.
4. Loses their ability to communicate. Their speech becomes limited to a few words or phrases.
5. Becomes vulnerable to infections, especially pneumonia and skin infections.
There’s no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but certain medications can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms. There are two types of medicines to manage Alzheimer’s disease - Cholinesterase inhibitors (e.g., Donepezil, Rivastigmine, Galantamine) and NMDA antagonists (Memantine). Certain medications may help in some people, including antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, anticonvulsant drugs, and antipsychotics.
