Former President *A. P. J. Abdul Kalam**, the Supreme Commander of the armed forces, once visited Coonoor and learned that **Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw* was admitted to the Military Hospital there. Despite the visit being unscheduled, arrangements were made for Kalam to meet the Field Marshal. Manekshaw, who had made Nilgiris his home after retiring from active service, warmly greeted the President. During their conversation, Kalam inquired about Manekshaw's health and wished him a speedy recovery. The Field Marshal, in turn, expressed a heartfelt grievance: "Sir, my grievance is that I am not able to get up and salute my most respected President of my beloved country." Moved by this, Kalam promptly addressed another issue: Manekshaw had not received the pension of the Field Marshal's rank for nearly twenty years. The President took swift action, ensuring that the pension with arrears was granted within a week. The amount, approximately *Rs 1.25 crores**, was sent to Wellington, Ooty, where Manekshaw was ailing. Remarkably, Manekshaw, upon receiving the cheque, donated it to the **Army Relief Fund**. This incident exemplifies the greatness of **A. P. J. Abdul Kalam* and the unwavering respect between these two remarkable individuals¹.
