Film, TV, interactive game composers, orchestrators, keyboardists, and percussionists are given consideration in this video, as we explore celeste and keyboard glockenspiel. How do they differ from each other? Why is keyboard glock so rare at this point? In conversation with Hollywood composer/orchestrator/arranger keyboardist Geoff Stradling, LA Percussion’s Abby Savell explores these instruments individually and in combination.

A keyboard glockenspiel is a rare musical instrument that combines elements of a mallet glockenspiel with a keyboard. It’s actually a predecessor of the celeste. It consists of thick metal bars that produce distinct, pointy pitches when struck. It offers a unique blend of percussive and keyboard instrument characteristics, enabling versatile and creative musical expression. You probably don’t hear it much, and in this video, we explore a bit why.
Celeste has a glossier tone and softer attack than keyboard glock. Part of the reason is because it uses thinner, wider bars that resemble glockenspiel - or even closer, song bells. It also uses felt hammers. It’s a fantastical sound that’s been used a ton by composers of orchestral music, chamber music, and film music, solo, and in combinations with other instruments.
