Located in the county of Lincolnshire, and around 95 miles north of London, is the town of Spalding.

Geographically, Spalding is situated on the River Welland in the South Holland district of Lincolnshire. The settlement is named after the Spaldingas tribe, who held land in the area during the 7th century. It is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Spallinge'.

In 1015 a Benedictine Priory was founded by Thorold de Bokenhale. Around 1284 construction began on St Mary and St Nicolas Church, which is still in use to this day, situated on the east bank of the River Welland. It is Grade I listed.

For centuries, Spalding has been a market town with a relatively quiet history. Early industry included salt-making and fisheries. Due to the rich silty soil around the town owing to its proximity to the marshlands of the Fen District, Spalding lies at the centre of a major region of flower and vegetable cultivation. This includes tulips. Between 1959 and 2013 Spalding hosted the annual Tulip Parade.

In 1848 Spalding was connected to the railways courtesy of the Great Northern Railway. This initially formed part of the now defunct Lincolnshire loop line, which closed in 1963 due to the Beeching cuts. Today, Spalding is situated on the Peterborough-Lincoln line.
