ELIZABETH WOODVILLE part 2 | How the Wars of the Roses ended | The White Queen of England | History

In the 1470s, ELIZABETH WOODVILLE, the wife of Edward IV seemed to have it all. The woman who would later be called the White Queen of England (after the white rose which symbolised the royal House of York, into which she was married), had come through an early widowhood, a scandalous remarriage, the murder of her father and brother by her in-laws, a spell in sanctuary when her husband was deposed and was now the undisputed Queen of England and the mother of the heir. However it was only a brief period of calm before the greatest storm of her life. In this Plantagenet documentary from History Calling, we’ll look at how Elizabeth, who was one of the women who fought the Wars of the Roses between the houses of York and Lancaster, may have had a hand in the drowning of her troublesome brother-in-law, George, Duke of Clarence and how she reacted when Edward IV died in 1483, leaving the throne to their 12 year old son, Edward V. We’ll see how she and her family fought to try to retain the crown for her child, but ultimately lost in the worst way possible, with the former Queen of England losing three of her sons (including the famous Princes in the Tower), finding herself stripped of her royal title and back in sanctuary with her daughters, as her dead husband’s other brother, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, seized the throne to become Richard III. This was the low point of Elizabeth’s life, but she wasn’t done yet. Stay until the end of the video to hear how the Wars of the Roses ended, as Elizabeth conspired with Lady Margaret Beaufort to topple a King, bring about the end of the Plantagenet dynasty and make herself the mother of the Queen, by arranging the union of her daughter, Elizabeth of York with Henry Tudor.
