Filmed at Spinex Disc Clinic in London, Stephen Small takes a TherMedic Lower Back heat pad and puts it under the IDD Therapy treatment harness during treatment. TherMedic is a new form of heat pad which produces FAR infrared energy. There are both thermal and non-thermal effects of FAR infrared. The experiment was a first look at how TherMedic might enhance the patient experience during a 25 minute IDD Therapy treatment.

During IDD Therapy relatively high distraction forces (half patient body weight) are applied at measured angles to open and mobilise spinal segments.

Heat has been shown to increase blood flow and improve soft tissue extensibility ('stretchiness'). Therefore given that the muscles in the lower back are being stretched during IDD, applying heat simultaneously might make those stretches more comfortable, or even facilitate a deeper stretch and thus a greater opening of the spinal disc space.

TherMedic has been shown to increase blood flow by over 200% and infrared has been shown to assist healing and reduce pain. Since TherMedic does not burn the skin, it can be worn for prolonged periods. There are therapeutic implications for increasing the amount of oxygenated blood flow into injured soft tissues. Stephen Small simply tests the heat from a patient perspective. Having had many IDD Therapy treatments, he is a guinea pig of sorts to try new ways of doing things. He concludes that the treatment is comfortable and 'nice', he says that a lot!

Other IDD Therapy providers might feel the heat for themselves and look further into the evidence for Infrared and heat to determine when and how they might elect to use the Thermedic heat simultaneously, whether for therapeutic goals or simply for patient comfort.
