WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP?

In September, the much-missed Star and Shadow is launching a crowdfunding campaign to raise £50,000 to build the cinema at their new venue on Warwick Street in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Last winter, faced with redevelopment of the area, The much loved Star and Shadow was forced to close the doors of its Stepney bank venue after 10 years of activity where films, music, theatre, art, and performance flourished. A hub for community groups, activist groups and much more was facing an uncertain future.

The good news is that a bigger, better, more versatile Star and Shadow is opening early next year in a disused carpet warehouse on Warwick Street.

WHAT WE'RE DOING

We have eight weeks to raise £50,000. This money will allow us to transform the site and build the new venue including gig and meeting spaces, artist studios, a new and improved bar/cafe, a library, community garden, crèche, a social hub (and room for family events and meetings) including space for family social events and activities.

Funding has been secured for much of the work, with devoted volunteers currently on site doing the necessary conversions but we need your support to get to the next stage.

“While we have a lot of the funding in place, we still have some way to go” says volunteer Sheena Revolta, "and we still need to raise £50,000 towards building the actual cinema".

With a new venue, the Star and Shadow can continue to bring much-loved movies, comedy, DJ nights and bands to the people, encouraging local and national talent, and at a price that all can afford. It's going to be a real arts venue that everyone can benefit from and be part of.

There are drumming workshops with Ladies of Midnight Blue, and there’ll be film-making workshops, hand printed t-shirts and much more.
