Asia has undergone a profound geopolitical transformation in the twenty-first century, driven most notably by China’s rapid rise in economic and military power. In India and the Rebalancing of Asia, C. Raja Mohan argues that these shifts have fundamentally altered the regional balance, compelling India to rethink long-held assumptions about power, partnerships, and strategic restraint. Moving beyond traditional ambivalence, New Delhi has incrementally repositioned itself as a central actor in shaping Asia’s emerging order.

Anchored in the themes of the book, this panel discussion will examine how India’s strategic role in Asia is evolving amid sharpening great-power rivalry, uncertainty surrounding U.S. global leadership, and China’s expanding regional footprint. It will assess India’s readiness—politically, economically, and militarily—to play a more consequential role in rebalancing Asia, and what this implies for regional security architectures, partnerships, and the rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific, particularly in an increasingly unpredictable global environment.
