Loot Boxes: Are They A Problem?

The whole microtransaction ecosystem in full-price games; I don't think there's any question that it's anti-consumer, but is it also an issue of ethics? I would argue that it is. Most business models are designed to exploit the consumer in some way, and this one in particular I find to be an issue. Partially because it targets such a young audience who have no real understanding of monetary value.

At the end of the day, I'm not an expert on socio-economic issues or whatever, and I don't pretend to be. I don't have children myself, but I think this new and emerging market needs to be treated as such. The argument that "oh it's just like booster packs" doesn't hold up for me. For starters, booster packs were never consumer friendly, just most of us were kids and didn't realise how we were being bamboozled.
