Floppy disks were one of the standard means of storing data in the 80’s and 90’s but were quite unreliable, slow, low capacity, fairly expensive and easy to damage. If you still work with old computer systems, such as the BBC Micro, then likely you will still have to work with floppy disks. But instead of working with real disks and a large, loud and heavy disk drive, you can use a floppy disk emulator such as the Gotek which stores disk images on a flash drive. Using a Gotek you have the benefits of flash memory - reliable, high capacity, cheap - while still being compatible with old computers. In this video I give an overview of a Gotek and do some tests using it with my BBC Micro B.

Note that as the Gotek uses the original disk interface of the target machine, a Gotek will be as fast as or somewhat faster than an original floppy disk drive.
