Former President Donald Trump addressed one of the largest cryptocurrency events of the year, Bitcoin 2024, in Nashville, Tennessee, pledging to fire the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chair if re-elected. Speaking to a crowd of industry leaders, Trump promised to dismiss SEC Chair Gary Gensler, who has led a crackdown on the crypto sector, on his first day in office. This announcement was met with loud cheers and chants of "Trump" from the audience.

Trump's appearance aimed to garner support and campaign donations from the tech community, as cryptocurrency becomes a significant issue for Republicans. He criticized the Democratic Party and Vice-President Kamala Harris for their stance on crypto, positioning himself as a proponent of the industry. In his 45-minute speech, Trump outlined his vision for making the US the global hub for cryptocurrency, a stark contrast to his 2021 comments when he labeled Bitcoin a “scam.”

Among his promises, Trump vowed to retain all Bitcoin currently held or acquired by the US government, creating a “national Bitcoin stockpile.” He also announced plans to establish a Bitcoin and crypto presidential advisory council and proposed building power plants, powered by fossil fuels, to support the energy-intensive process of cryptocurrency mining.

Support for Trump from tech leaders has been growing, with endorsements from figures like Tesla founder Elon Musk and the Winklevoss twins, who were present at the event. Trump highlighted his campaign’s acceptance of cryptocurrency donations, claiming to have received $25 million in such contributions over the past two months, though he did not specify the portion derived from cryptocurrency.

Trump framed cryptocurrency regulation as a partisan issue, accusing the Biden administration of being “anti-crypto.” The event also featured appearances from several Republican lawmakers, including Senators Tim Scott and Tommy Tuberville, as well as former presidential candidate and Trump ally Vivek Ramaswamy. Additionally, independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Democratic lawmakers Wiley Nickel and Ro Khanna spoke at the event, with Nickel mentioning Kamala Harris’s “forward-looking approach to digital assets and blockchain technology.”
