St. Thomas International Shrine popularly known as Malayattoor Palli is an international catholic pilgrimage site in Kerala India dedicated to Saint Thomas the Apostle of Jesus Christ . The Malayattoor church history made it blessed by Pope John Paul II to declare this hill shrine as one of the international pilgrimage tourism sites around the world . It is believed that Thomasleeha landed at Kodungallur in AD 52 to spread the christian faith and established about seven churches in Kerala India . When he came to Malayathoor as part of the gospel preaching, he was rejected by the people at first. Kurishumudi or Kurisumala is the 1200 feet height hill top in Malayattoor where the miracle signs of Saint Thomas can be seen. Millions of pilgrims visit this toughest pilgrimage trek in South india in every year from all part of the world making it a famous pilgrimage tourism site. The Ponnin Kurishu or the golden cross is one of such important remains believed to be formed as a result of the prayers by Saint Thomas the Apostle . The pilgrimage starts from Thazathe Palli and then move to Adivaram church just before the trekking. Aana Kuthiya Palli is an ancient chapel in Malayattur which was attacked by Wild Elephants and the damage made by the tusks can be seen on the walls of this pilgrim centre in india. Another greatest remain of St. Thomas is his footprint and the marks of knees on the rocks where he used to pray . The belief about the miraculous well ( Albhutha kinar ) is that thirsty St. Thomas hit the rock with a stick for water and a spring came out of it. Believers consider the spring that quenched the saint's thirst as holy water. Marthoma Mandapam and Sannidhi are other areas of Malayattoor Kurishumudi for prayers. Malayattur is the first International Pilgrim Center of the Catholic Churches in India. The special feature of Malayatur Ponnin Kurishumala is that you can perform the pilgrimage 365 days a year. Kurbana starts at 7:30 everyday in the morning. Lakhs of devotees from different castes and religions climb the holy Malayattoor mala ( mountain ) every year. New Sunday after Easter is celebrated as the annual festival also called Malayattoor Perunnal in the church . Those who come from distant lands and climb the mountain with wooden crosses and bare feet are filled with painful memories of the suffering journey of Jesus who died on the cross. The majesty of the Malayatur pilgrimage is the search for holiness with an open heart, beyond the pains and troubles of the body.
