How to hem pants quickly and make money doing it. I've made money doing alterations on my own and I've worked for a high-end men's shop. When you do alterations on your own, you charge per piece. If you charge $15 a pair and can do 15 pairs in an hour, you make $225 an hour. If you work for someone, they usually pay minimum wage per hour. If you did those same 15 pants in an hour, you make $8, $12, or $15 per hour. You are ripping yourself off! I worked there because I was new in town (and the state) and didn't know anyone and really didn't know how to alter men's clothes, so I felt like it was a fair trade. Minimum wage (they did raise my pay a couple of times in the 1.5 years I was there)
