Liver transplant is an operation or a process in which you remove damaged liver from the patient's body (liver which is not functioning well) and replace it with a new and healthy liver from a donor. Transplant is done when a hepatologist feels that a patient who has chronic liver disease or cirrhosis and that his liver is not functioning well, and liver function tests are bad.

Before taking the decision of transplant, hepatologists try all the medicines and everything that can support the liver or other organs. Liver transplants are broadly of two types -
1) Deceased liver donor transplant, which means that the liver that you are donating is from a braindead person.
2) Living donor related transplant, which means that the liver that you are donating is from a healthy living person.

In deceased liver donor transplant, as the name suggests, the donor is brain dead. If there are any cases of trauma in a hospital or a person is brain dead for any reason and there is no hope that his brain will be able to function or sustain life, then the rest of his organs are healthy in the body. So, we procure the liver from his body and use it for transplant.

In living donor transplant, we procure a small portion of the liver from the body of a patient's close family member, preferably of the same blood group.

The liver has a regenerative capacity and there are very few organs in the body that can regenerate. But the liver is an organ that can regenerate. That is why when you procure a small portion of the liver from a living donor and transplant it to the patient, the liver that you have removed from the donor grows and becomes of the same original size. And the portion that you have implanted in the patient also gradually grows and becomes of a good size and sustains life.
