Katchatheevu is a 163-acre uninhabited island administered by Sri Lanka. It was a disputed territory between India and Sri Lanka until 1974.
The island, located between Neduntheevu, Sri Lanka, and Rameswaram, India, has historical significance for both Sri Lankan Tamil and Tamil Nadu fishermen.
In 1974, India's then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, acknowledged Katchatheevu as part of Sri Lanka under the "Indo-Sri Lankan Maritime Agreement," aimed at settling maritime boundaries in the Palk Strait.
Subsequently, a 1976 agreement was signed, prohibiting fishermen from both countries from fishing in each other's exclusive economic zones. This island's ownership and fishing rights have been addressed through these agreements, involving both nations.
