Dred Scott's quest for freedom led to a critical case in U.S. history, impacting its legal and societal framework. Facing disappointments in Missouri's courts, Scott eventually partnered with attorney Roswell Field, who took on his case without a fee. They pushed the case to federal court when his owner, John Sanford, relocated to New York. Following another loss under a federal trial in 1854 with Judge Robert William Wells upholding Missouri law, Scott's legal battle reached the U.S. Supreme Court. There, a clerical error listed the case as "Scott v. Sandford." Despite an esteemed defense team, including Montgomery Blair and George Ticknor Curtis, the Supreme Court ruled against Scott, reinforcing slavery and fueling Civil War tensions. The Dred Scott decision epitomizes America's conflict over slavery and the pursuit of equality.
