Faku: Chief of the Mpondo

Описание к видео Faku: Chief of the Mpondo

Chief Faku allied with missionaries and the British colonial government. Pondoland was the last chiefdom in South Africa to fall under British rule.

Faku a Ngqungqushe

Faku was King of the Mpondo from 1815-1867, today part of the Eastern Cape in South Africa.

After his father King Ngqungqushe died, Faku inherited his power and expanded his territory

in a period of intense raiding and migration, he transformed the Mpondo from a loose collection of groups into an effective and powerful Kingdom. Because of Faku, the Mpondo became the last African Kingdom in Southern Africa to fall under colonial rule.

In 1830, Faku allowed missionaries into his kingdom and he skilfully manipulated missionaries, neighbours, and colonists.

In 1844, he forged an alliance with the Cape Colony and encouraged British colonization of Natal, ensuring his kingdom was defined according to Western standards of the time.

Faku parried African rivals over a half-century and adeptly used his links with the British and the missionaries to establish rule over the largest Xhosa state caught between the expanding Zulu and British powers.

Faku, with his sons Mqikela and Ndamase, defended the Mpondoland during the 19th century Mfecane Wars.

The Mpondo Kingdom is now lead by King Zanozuko Sigcau.
