In addition to standard insulin pump therapy, Automated Insulin Delivery (or AID) systems deliver insulin similarly to standard insulin pump therapy with one major difference: insulin delivery automatically changes based on where glucose values are and where they are predicted to go. Wearing a Continuous Glucose Monitoring (or CGM) System along with an insulin pump is needed for AID systems to work.

AID systems are equipped with algorithms that can receive CGM values and calculate how much basal insulin to deliver based on current and predicted glucose values. When a bolus dose is needed for a meal and/or correction, these systems also have calculators that can suggest a bolus amount.

Unlike basal delivery, bolus delivery is not automatic; manual programming and delivery is needed just like a standard insulin pump.
