Week 4: Flood Risk in Urban Settlements
This module examines how floods interact with urban poverty, governance, and social vulnerability to create disproportionate risks in informal settlements. Drawing on research from the World Bank, Pandey et al. (2018), and McLeman (2014), it explores how inadequate infrastructure, insecure tenure, and exclusion from decision-making magnify the impacts of flooding. Through case studies across the Global South, the lecture highlights both immediate threats—like waterborne disease and infrastructure collapse—and long-term challenges, including malnutrition and urban displacement. Framed through a climate justice lens, it emphasizes the role of governance, equity, and community resilience in shaping adaptation and recovery.
