74-year-old Padma Shri awardee, Sindhutai Sapkal, known as 'Anathanchi Maye' or 'Mother of orphans', passed away following a heart attack at the Galaxy Care Hospital in Pune.

She was popularly known as Mai (mother), by over 1,500 orphaned children she had taken under her care and also ran several orphanages across Maharashtra.

Form having four biological children before she was 20, suffering domestic abuse and begging & singing to make ends meet, to becoming ‘The Mother Of Orphans’ & being bestowed with the Padma Shri, Sindhutai’s life is one that instills immense hope & inspiration.

Her life also inspired film maker Ananth Mahadevan to direct a biopic of the celebrated social worker named Mee Sindhutai Sapkal ( I Am Sindhutai Sapkal)
