Historian, presenter and author Alice Loxton has an immensely popular social media channel and is on a mission to improve heritage and history for young people. Journalist and author Sathnam Sanghera delivers an essential introduction to the British empire in his book Stolen History: The truth about the British Empire and how it shaped us for readers as young as nine years old. In conversation with writer and Associate Professor of History at the University of Oxford Yasmin Khan, Loxton and Sanghera discuss their approaches to chronicling the past.

Alice Loxton is a 27-year-old historian, writer and presenter. She is passionate about bringing history to mainstream audiences and has worked with History Hit, Channel 4, Call of Duty, LadBible, Minecraft, Xbox, BBC Bitesize, The National Trust and many other charities and organisations. Sathnam Sanghera graduated from Christ’s College, Cambridge with a first class degree in English Language and Literature. He has been shortlisted for the Costa Book Awards twice, for his memoir The Boy With The Topknot and his novel Marriage Material, the former being adapted by BBC Drama in 2017. His third book, Empireland: How Imperialism Has Been Shaped Modern Britain, became an instant Sunday Times bestseller in 2021, was named Book of the Year at the 2022 British Books Awards, and inspired Channel 4’s Empire State of Mind.

Yasmin Khan is a historian at the University of Oxford who writes history books and fiction and has presented history television series on BBC television. Her books include The Great Partition and The Raj at War. In 2023 she will publish Overland, a fictional account of the Hippie Trail to India.
