Turning Ebony Lid for Collaborative Hollow Form

Join me in my workshop as I add an ebony lid to a small hollow form.

I received the piece, a hollow form, from a guild member as part of a collaborative turning challenge. When I received it, it was almost completely finished. I wondered, "What can I do to this piece without ruining it?" I decided that adding a small lid would be a great idea.

To add the lid, I would need to cut a small recess at the top of the piece, but I didn't know how to do that as I couldn't see how to hold the piece. The piece's foot was too small to grab with jaws, only a few millimetres and tapered the wrong way. Looking for alternatives, I discovered doughnut chucks, something that I'd never used.

The ebony lid was also tiny, and I had to get creative in holding the wood to get to a finished piece.
