At the Alaska SeaLife Center, our seabird research extends far beyond the Center’s walls and into the waters of the Gulf of Alaska.

Since 2011, ASLC and the National Park Service have teamed up to conduct monthly surveys, documenting seabird species and abundance across seasons and years. Rain, snow, or shine, our scientists board the small landing craft Jubatus once a month to count every bird within our study area.

Along the way, they also record sightings of marine mammals and other wildlife. These observations provide valuable insights into which species are present at different times of year and how the bay’s ecosystem responds to shifting conditions.
