In case a flattened bend is needed, the press brake operator has to choose hemming tools.
This type of bend is carried out to reinforce thin sheet metal edges or to avoid burr on the outer part of the sheet metal, which may injure people handling the finished product. The thickest sheet metal to be flattened is 2mm stainless steel and 3mm mild steel, as thicker sheet metal may crack or damage tools.
There are two flattened bend types:
• Partial flattening: sheet metal is flattened by low tonnage, therefore springback generates a drop shape between the flattened side and the rest of the sheet metal.
• Flattening: sheet metal is completely flattened.
