National Highway 66, also known as NH 66 (formerly NH-17 and part of NH-47), is a major 1640 km (1020 miles) long highway that runs primarily along the western coast of India, parallel to the Western Ghats. This busy route connects Panvel, a city near Mumbai, to Kanyakumari, passing through the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.
In Karnataka, the highway is undergoing significant upgrades, as the state government has approved the National Highways Authority of India's (NHAI) proposal to develop the highway to international standards, expanding it to 60 meters wide with grade separators. The entire stretch from the Goa border near Karwar to the Kerala border near Talapady is being widened to four lanes, with provisions for future expansion to six lanes. Despite protests from locals over land acquisition, the Karnataka government has decided to proceed with the wider stretch.
In Kerala, the land acquisition and tendering process for a six-lane national highway have been completed, and new bypass construction has already begun. Due to the high population density and land value, the highway in Kerala will be 45 meters wide, with six lanes, a similar alignment to that planned for Goa. The Karnataka and Maharashtra sections will have a 60-meter width, with the Maharashtra section being converted into a four-lane flexible pavement (asphalt) road.
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has also proposed a greenfield expressway corridor connecting the port cities of Mangalore, Karwar, and Panaji. This new access-controlled expressway, part of the Indian National Expressway Network, will run parallel to NH-66, mainly within coastal Karnataka, and is expected to be a six-to-eight lane expressway.
