STORYLINE:
Eight powerful explosions resounded across Beirut early on Friday and local media reports said Israeli jets were pounding Hezbollah strongholds in the southern Dahieh suburb.
AP Television video showed several large explosions in Dahieh, followed by huge columns of black smoke rising from the cityscape.
Concrete rubble covered the streets of an entire neighbourhood in the suburb, with several buildings destroyed or substantially damaged.
An AP television crew said the neighbourhood was deserted by its residents months ago, and the buildings targeted appeared to be empty.
Reports said a bridge was also hit in Akkar province, 60 miles (97 kilometres) north of Beirut. There was no immediate word of casualties.
