(2 Oct 2018) An Italian non-profit organization representing victims of clerical sex abuse announced Tuesday that it is filing a complaint against the Italian state accusing it of "disinterest" in pursuing cases of clerical sexual abuse because the church in Italy is considered "untouchable."
Relatively few cases of clerical sex abuse have emerged in Italy while around the globe, from the US to Ireland and Australia, cases are growing exponentially – activists and survivors say it is due to a lack of will in a country where the Catholic Church has long dominated politics.
Speaking at the Foreign Press Association in Rome, Francesco Zanardi, President of Rete l'Abuso (Abuse Network), an association of survivors of sexual abuse by clergy, told reporters that the Italian government tends "to leave the church in peace, to disinterest itself" when faced with accusations of sexual abuse by clergy "because the Church, in Italy, is untouchable."
Meanwhile, a former altar boy who claims to have witnessed clerical sex abuse during his time at the Vatican's youth seminary said he hoped the complaint would lead the Italian judiciary to "open cases so that the victims will receive justice".
The reveleation that Kamil Jarzembowski - then a teenage seminarian at the Vatican's youth seminary - had, in 2012, accused one of the older boys of sexually molesting his roommate came to light last year following an investigation by two Italian journalists.
The Associated Press has learned that the victim has since filed a formal complaint with the Vatican's criminal tribunal and Italian church authorities launched a canonical investigation into the newly ordained priest.
The status of the investigation is currently unclear.
