Here’s how you can do it:

🗺️: Find a location away from bright lights and the sky glow of your city.

📱: Open your camera app and point it at the sky. The aurora will appear to the north.

🚫: Make sure your flash is off and that your camera is in night mode.

How to Adjust Exposure:

Both Android and iPhone feature night modes that automatically adjust some of your settings. Android and iPhone limit your exposure time based on how still the camera is. This helps you avoid blurry images while shooting long exposures.

The longer the exposure, the brighter your image. If you’re unhappy with the auto-exposure, you can manually increase or decrease the exposure.

If your photos look too bright or dark, you may need to manually increase or decrease your exposure. To do this, tap the screen and drag the sun icon to your desired exposure.

Depending on your phone model, using a tripod will allow you to take longer exposures, up to 30 seconds. Don’t worry if you can’t get your hands on a tripod. Even though holding your phone instead of using a tripod limits your exposure time to around 3-10 seconds, this is often all the time you need to get a great photo of the northern lights.

Taking a Photo:

Now that your settings are adjusted, press the shutter button.

Hold as still as possible for the duration of the exposure time.
