This is a compilation of soundbites by Little Italy activist, Florence Scala, as they appear in the documentary, "Cheat You Fair: The Story of Maxwell Street", narrated by actor, Joe Mantegna.

This interview was conducted on Feb. 18, 2006 by documentary filmmaker, Phil Ranstrom, on the first floor of her Taylor St. residence where her restaurant, Florence, existed until it was closed in 1990.

When the old Maxwell Street market was threatened by the University of Illinois at Chicago's expansion in 1991, she wrote in the Chicago Tribune it should "be saved in some decent form -- not just a token, chic little street shopping area. It should be just the way it is -- wild, crummy and gutsy."

"She had a great sense of compassion, of wanting people to be treated fairly", said her nephew, Steven Giovangelo, an Episcopal priest in Indianapolis. "She had a vision of the community and the city that centered around caring for one another."

Studs Terkel once remarked: "She was my heroine. She tried with intelligence and courage to save the soul of our city. She represented to me all that Chicago could have been."
