Negotiating a job offer? Jacqueline, a consultant, shares how she did it.

Her key pieces of advice are:

1. If you have leverage, use it. Offers from more than one company can help in the negotiating process.
2. Have confidence in yourself.
3. Remind yourself that you are evaluating the company as much as they are evaluating you.
4. Do market research on the standard salary range for your role. If you plan to ask for more, understand that a company may not be able to justify the expense without a strong reason.
5. Understand that your base salary sets your long-term earning trajectory. Even if you don’t think you need to make a certain amount today, you may be in this role for a few years. Your base salary also impacts your 401k and bonus - this can really add up over the long-term!
6. It’s normal to be nervous! Practice your negotiation skills to feel more comfortable.
