Handel's "Lift Up Your Heads, O Ye Gates" is a stirring chorus from his renowned oratorio, "Messiah." Composed in 1741, "Messiah" remains one of Handel's most celebrated works, capturing the essence of the Easter story, including events leading up to Palm Sunday.

Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem, where crowds greeted him with shouts of "Hosanna" and laid palm branches before him as he rode in on a donkey. This event is significant in Christian tradition as it symbolizes the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent leading up to Easter Sunday.

Handel's "Lift Up Your Heads" is often performed during Palm Sunday services due to its jubilant and majestic tone, perfectly capturing the exultation and anticipation associated with Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. The text for this chorus is derived from Psalm 24:7-10, which speaks of the gates of Jerusalem being lifted up to allow the King of Glory to enter.
