USS Vincennes (CA-44) was a New Orleans-class heavy cruiser built at the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation’s Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts, and commissioned in February 1937. After her pre-war service in the Atlantic and Caribbean, she joined the Pacific Fleet in early 1942. She took part in the Doolittle Raid and the Battle of Midway, before supporting the landings on Guadalcanal in early August of 1942. In the early morning hours of August 9th, Vincennes, along with sisters Astoria and Quincy, were surprised and overwhelmed by a powerful Japanese cruiser force. Heavily damaged by gunfire and torpedoes, Vincennes was abandoned and sank with a heavy loss of life less than an hour after 1st being engaged. During one of the darkest nights in the history of the US Navy, her men fought gallantly against overwhelming odds and upheld the fine tradition of the United States Navy.
